The art in INDIA survived in and around temples. The dances coming out from the temples are known as the Classical Dance of India. These styles are commonly known as Shastriya Nritya i.e. Nritya(dance) in accordance with the shastras(the Scriptures). These are hence aptly called THE SCRIPTURAL DANCES. The Indian Dances coordinates body, mind and soul and the zero point of these coordinates is the ultimate perfection of human creation. Here the dancer unifies with his God. Indian Dances are classical not just because they are having their origin in the temples but as it involves the man’s spiritual identification. The Indian arts, not only dance but also music, painting, sculpturing, all seek the mans unity with the eternal artist God; the creator of Universe. This artist of infinite existence and his brain is far beyond the reach of human brain. But his craving to know more of him is the manifestation called ART. Its vastness makes him wonder at the God’s artistery7. Ha gave, rhythmicity to everything. The best example is the movement of the planets, galaxies and the time recurring. He gave nature the beauty, the moon the stars, the valleys and the seas. He perfected the music in nightingale’s voice, the chirping of the birds, the clouds thunderous roar and in each moment God danced. He does so in every single heartbeat of man, whom he sculptured out of the earth, he knew man would love Him and search his Art. God guides man in all his works. The ancient scriptures ‘the Upanishads’ say,”Devo bhutva Devam yajet “. Become God to worship God and dance was the best was to it. In an Indian classical dance the dancer is the devotee who is separated from God. The dancer yearns for God as a woman longs for her beloved.
